FIR Filed Against Professor After Student’s Suicide, Parents Allege Caste Discrimination

An FIR has been registered against a professor at IIT Bombay following the suicide of a student whose parents allege caste-based discrimination. The Mumbai police are investigating the case after a complaint was filed by the student’s father, who claims the student faced casteist remarks and threats from the professor.

The student’s father has accused the professor of making casteist remarks over the past three months and threatening to implicate the student falsely before the incident. The police have registered a case of abetment of suicide and are conducting further investigations into the persons named in the FIR.

The IIT Bombay administration said the students have internal administrative issues that have been addressed previously and that they are actively engaging with the students currently. The matter was also discussed with the student by the instructor, the faculty advisor, and the Head of the Department, who counselled him and assured that the incident would not adversely affect his academic career.
